and of the Ohio Division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy (R)
The Johnson's Island Committee wishes to thank each and every individual and group contribution made to our project to identify and honor the Confederate soldiers who perished in the Johnson's Island Military Prison. Johnson's Island is located near Sandusky Ohio on Lake Erie.
More than 12,000 men suffered deprivation and mistreatment while prisoners of war on the island. Disease, starvation, execution and the effects of severe weather took its toll on brave men who fought to preserve southern rights and freedom. Many individuals sent documentation that aided in our research. Our project has been completed thanks to the wonderful support and financial generosity of our many contributors. We acknowledge and thank each of you. We also thank Canton Monument for their hard work and dedication to help us realize our goal. Please visit their website at www.canmon.com
On each side of the Confederate " Lookout Statue" in Johnson's Island cemetery, there now stands a 6 foot tall beautiful gray granite monument. All four sides of the monuments are beautifully engraved and one side features an engraved map of the cemetery. This map is unique in the fact that it shows the placement of bodies newly discovered using non invasive thermal imagery.
Please join us for our annual Confederate Memorial day on Saturday April 23rd at noon.
Memorial service starts at 1pm
