Plans were begun in 2003 to apply for a memorial marker supplied to all proven veterans of American wars. After years of research and many hours of paperwork, Walter was recognized by the nation's oldest patriotic organization the United Daughters of the Confederacy in 1998. Under his service as a "Confederate Partisan" Walter has now received a 42 inch tall , light gray granite memorial marker. The marker was installed and dedicated in June of 2004 in Big Run Cemetery in Diana , Webster County, West Virginia. Many descendants , Historical Society members, and others were in attendance.
Many thanks to Mr. Ron Hardway for his work "The Tragedy of Walter Cool" that was published by the Webster County Historical Society. Without this intriguing and captivating look into Walter's life, we would not have been as motivated (some say obsessed) to pursue this project as readily. Our thanks to you Mr. Hardway!
I added his photo with my software :-)

Since we have no record or knowledge of Walter's final resting place, his memorial marker was placed in the family cemetery in Diana West Virginia. It is our goal to now concentrate on having his sons, Jesse, John and Archibald also recognized by the V. A. with memorial stones also. These boys never came home after the War Between the States raged through the nation.
